THE HISTORY OF THE DV YOUNGMEN
Although the history of the DV Youngmen has really just begun, it is already quite a detailed story.  There have been many
transitions in the team's five years.  Ahead you will find the team's history for each season played so far.  A breakdown of each
year provides an understanding of what went right, what went wrong, and what the standings ultimately mean.
Whats Behind the Name?
The DV Youngmen Soccer Club is quite different from any other team.  We
pride ourselves in fairness for each individual.  This involves asking players
where
they would like to play, as well as practical equal playing time for all.
Of course, that does not mean the players will get what they ask for, just
that a consideration will be made and followed upon somehow.
The Story
The DV Youngmen were formed by Brad and Russ Kelly.  Brad had turned 18 and
would be unable to play youth soccer after that current season.  The only option was
to play mens soccer.  The Kelly's knew that the EDSA (Edmonton and District Soccer
Association) was a competitive league, and knowing that the DV Oldboys were in this
league also, decided that this was the best route to go to play.  However, Brad did
not want to simply join a team.  There were other players from Drayton Valley in the
same situation, and it was very unlikely that an existing team would have enough
room to take them all in.  Brad opted to make a team of his own, dubbing it the DV
Youngmen (after the DV Oldboys, who were mostly comprised of Drayton Valley
players as well).  There was one last reason for creating a team, rather than just
simply joining one...
"Brad opted to make a team of his own,
dubbing it the DV Youngmen"
Whats the Difference?
By creating his own team, Brad was able to decide how the club would
develop.  There was a vision of having a tight-knit group of players.  Not
only would this team be skilled, but it would also be
fun to play on.  The DV
group have played together since early minor soccer, knew each other
well, and always tried to have fun.  Knowing each other off the field is just
as important as on the pitch.  The difference between the DV Youngmen
and the other clubs is the bond.  We are a competitive team with a
recreational attitude, and we do our best to stick to that slogan!
"We are a competitive team with a
recreational attitude..."
The Philosophy
The true philosophy of the team is within the players themselves.  Each player has a
great attitude which really helps the team bond.  Players are chosen by their attitude
and heart, foremost.  The ability to learn, willingness to learn, and how far a player
can develop are second most important.  We do not choose players based on
height, weight, race, age or history.  Players are chosen based on who they are and
where they can go.

Of course, the team style of play is a whole different philosophy altogether.  It is so
different, in fact, that it will not be discussed outside of management.  We will say
this.  It is believed that we have found a way to combine all of the different styles of
play found throughout the world; from the European style of football, through the
Asian and South American ways, while still maintaining the North American roots.
Into the Future...
We will continue to strive towards our goals using the techniques we
believe are revolutionary.  This is only our fifth year of play, so of course all
of these things have yet to come together to make the visual impact that we
see of the future.  Our hopes are high, as are our spirits, and someday we
will hopefully be able to branch our passion to others and make a
difference.  Time will tell.
Our very first season!  Our very first game we only had 7 players and lost the game 1 - 0 in a 5 minute injury time!  That team
wound up finishing in first place overall.  Pretty impressive!  Battle for relegation came down to the last games.  Lack of league
experience cost us a few.  This included forgetting the game cards, as well as having to forfeit the first game because we did
not have the team together yet.  The story of the season was lack of players.  Our first season, and we simply did not have
the man power yet.  Everyone stayed optimistic, though, and we kept the core players through the next few seasons.  We
proved ourselves indoor, placing second in still only our first year!
YEAR ONE STANDINGS
SYNOPSIS
:
The second season involved many new players and some truly tough teams!  We placed top part of the pack in outdoor.
However, we were the only club to beat the first place team, and we did it both times!  The race was close and came down to
the last games of the year.  We picked up on many league functions and knowledge.
Indoor was a mix of some extremely tough teams and some extremely tough road conditions, making it way too difficult to field
a full team.  The team looked very strong throughout the season.  If we could only have had a full team each game...
YEAR TWO STANDINGS
SYNOPSIS
:
Not many new faces.  Challenge of the year, again, was fielding enough players.  Work tied many players down.  Strong start
and finish, but in between it was a matter of overall team strength.  We did not know what the next game would bring in terms
of players, and it hurt us.  In search of play time we failed to carry enough substitutes for injuries, guys at work, etc.
We learned from our mistakes, though, and we now have a large roster with dedicated and talented players.  After several
exhibition games our hopes and confidence were high.
YEAR THREE STANDINGS
SYNOPSIS
:
Our fourth year has passed, and it was the best one yet!  With the help of some quality players we managed first place for the
first time in our clubs history!  Some wild losses in the middle had us correcting our mistakes early.  The team leaders really
put their foot down and their hearts out and pushed us until the end.
Indoor was a strong showing... but the first few games cost us the season!  We thought we had our team selected, then had
players bail out on us at the last minute.  Suppose its understandable, though, since they went to a Division 1 team.  Shows
what kind of talent we are starting to draw in!  We plan on being completely prepaired for the next outdoor season.
YEAR FOUR STANDINGS
SYNOPSIS
:
The clubs fifth year is looking to be an exciting one.  Everyone is absolutely dedicated and anxious to get things going!  We
had maintained our exact same squad since indoor.  We had been training regularly, but now holidays are kicking in, finals
are coming up in school, and we find ourselves without the same group of players game in, game out.  This is the year where
everything starts.  We are now established to a comfortable point.  We have some insane goals and visions which include the
Worlds Longest Soccer Game, a Team Bus, Club House, and Newspaper.  We are now featured on the Radio weekly and are
exposing ourselves with youth clinics and fundraisers on a regular basis.  LOOKOUT, HERE COME THE DV YOUNGMEN!!

INDOOR SEASON
The next three years already!  Our fourth year is looking more promising.  We have picked up some extremely gifted players,
team moral is high, and so far we haven't lost an exhibition game!  We have been practicing hard and often through rain,
shine, snow and sleet.  The team has changed dramatically in the past few months.  Our best efforts will be towards expanding
on the team and taking it to the next level game after game.  These next three years will be a showcase!
